Why Marketing Your Own Business Can Be So Hard (and what do about it) – Part 2

Following on from yesterday’s blog post about how lack of time to dedicate to marketing can be a common challenge for SME owner/managers, today I am looking at another issue you may face if you’re running your own business, and trying to do your own marketing: lack of experience and knowledge about marketing.

In today’s fast-moving world, as consumer behaviour changes rapidly due to societal, environmental and economic influences, as well as technology, it can be a struggle to keep up. What do customers want? How do they want to be communicated with now? What kind of messages will they respond to?

People are living increasingly busy lives and being bombarded with messages all the time so how can we cut through the noise and grab their attention?

Things that maybe worked a few years, or even months ago, may no longer be working for your business any more. So you may need to take time out from doing the ‘same-old-same-old’ marketing activities if they’re not delivering the return on investment you need/want/were used to getting.

But where do you go next? If you’re looking to change things up and try some different approaches it can be hard to know where to start. You might look to make time to read more (marketing books and press), attend seminars and training, or learn through trial and error, but all these approaches will cost you time and money and may not yield the results you seek.

If you want to up-skill yourself so you can continue to plan and manage your own marketing then investing in learning, education and experimentation could be worthwhile, but if you are looking to grow your business so you no longer have to ‘do-it-all’ and be a jack-of-all trades, then now might be the time to consider getting expert support and putting a solid marketing strategy and system in place to get you closer to your goal.
